Sales are tempting, but most of them are only good for the seller.

When does it make sense to buy points?

1. You’re so close to a flight or hotel redemption, but short of a few thousand points.

2. You are actually getting a great deal! (Don’t hold your breath).

Let me share and example, I’m currently looking for a category 8 Marriott in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The cost is around $450 if you pay cash, but 40,000 Marriott plus about $174 (fees and cash portion). Right now there is no promo, so the cost of those points would be $500. During low season using points would not make any sense because the price of the room can be close to $200. However, buying these points at $0.70 or better and using them during peak season can result in the best return on your points investment.
