I was chatting about my points and miles strategy for the rest of the year and next when my coworker pointed out, that sounds like your own version of Game Of Thrones, but with points!
Well, in this game instead of an iron throne, we want business or first class seats and suites. While, I’ve never done a mattress run or miles run to reach status, I must admit I’ve been tempted to do it a couple of times. It’s fun to read about the sometimes foolish lengths to which some people are willing to go to reach or maintain status.
One thing I have learned since switching to miles and points from cash back is that great deals are few and when you see one you should take it. For instance, up until last March one could have gotten the Southwest companion pass for the rest of this year and 2018 by transferring the required amount of points from hotels. I hated when my mid level status with Hyatt went from the equivalent of gold to bronze. Many people found a workaround and were able to give themselves their previous status. Last, if you did not pull the trigger when the Chase Sapphire Reserve was offering 100,000 signup bonus, well, you know the feeling.
